2/24/2024 0 Comments Famous ephemeral artists![]() There is also a long story behind Sokołowsko. And so, since 2008 Sokołowsko is our main venue – the Foundation is rebuilding the old sanatorium and establishing an International Laboratory for Culture in Sokołowsko. Even though the building was half-ruined they decided that this is the place. After having visited a number of really interesting places around Poland, the Foundation’s presidents, Zuzanna Fogtt and Bożenna Biskupska, were completely charmed by Sokołowsko and the former sanatorium building from the 19 th century made of red brick in neo-gothic style. Few years ago the In Situ Foundation, which is based in Warsaw, was looking for a place to start an arts center – but not in one of the urban centers of the country. This place is not a temporary festival venue. All of them have a strong aspect of being closely related with temporality, questions of time the work’s physical existence.īD: Where is the festival located? What is the importance of the town of Sokołowsko?ĪB: The festival venue is a small town in the mountains of South-Western part of Poland, right at the Polish-Czech border. We are working with performance and installation, video, sound and social-related works. ![]() The notion of ephemeral art lets the festival to engage with a vast spectrum of issues and artistic activities. In this sense a lot of those works are site-specific. The situation of working far away from large cities creates certain situation that is attracting artists to create ephemeral works. Last year we’ve started experimenting with transmitting all the events live via internet. Also, we are trying to document what is happening at the festival. Many of them have not yet been published. Each year we are presenting works, photos, documents or footage from the artists’ archives. One of the strong issues that we are dealing with at the festival is the documentation. This tradition is still very alive in Poland (and in our region in general) and still influences a lot of younger artists.Īnother issue is the question of the nature of ephemeral art which includes the question of its durability. It was partly influenced by the conditions of post-war era, which forced a lot of artists to work in very low-budget and non-institutionalized way. Started by artists such as Jerzy Bereś and Zbigniew Warpechowski, it became one of the most avant-garde movements in Polish art after the Second World War. Polish art has a strong tradition of performance and ephemeral art. And as the place is undergoing a change the whole situation is a bit ephemeral – it’s still changing.
